Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress as well as a singer. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked the class at Irvington High School. Her father and mother divorced after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school within Newark New Jersey. When she was 8, her cousin gave her stage names Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah was always large, at 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. At her school's game, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah was a part of with the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of a group of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first single Wrath of My Madness.
